Music Therapy at The Maple Center
The Maple Center is pleased to announce a new service. Tracy Richardson will offer music therapy sessions on Tuesday afternoons by appointment at The Maple Center, 1801 N. Sixth St., Suite 600, Terre Haute, IN 47804
Music therapy is a profession in which a trained music therapist uses music experiences in order to help people with a variety of problems. Music therapy at The Maple Center will be geared toward people who want to: 1) manage stress in a healthy way, 2) develop methods of self-care for maintaining wellness, or 3) cope with an illness or stage-of-life problem. It is important to know that you do not have to be a musician or to be “musical” in order to benefit from music therapy. You simply need to have a therapeutic issue that you want help with, and have an openness to using musical experiences as a way to work on that issue. It is also important to understand that you and the therapist make up a collaborative team; together you will decide how to use the music to help you.
In the first session, the music therapist will talk with you about what you would like to accomplish in therapy, what kinds of musical experiences you have had in the past, and what your musical preferences are. A typical music therapy session might consist of one or more of the following music experiences:
• Using prerecorded music as a tool for relaxation
• Drawing or moving to music
• Writing songs that express emotions
• Playing rhythm instruments
• Singing
• Listening to and talking about song lyrics
Tracy Richardson, M.S., MT-BC, has been a music therapist since 1988. She has practiced music therapy with people with mental health concerns, children with developmental disabilities, adults with cancer, and terminally ill patients. She believes that the therapeutic relationship between client and therapist is enriched by the use of music, and that the music and the therapeutic relationship can help a person make progress toward his or her goals.
Music therapy has been an established healthcare profession in the United States since 1950. Music therapists complete an extensive curriculum of courses in music, psychology, music therapy, and other areas. They also complete 1200 supervised hours of clinical training before taking the national board examination.
Session fee is $50.00.
