  • Agriculture Forum Helps Farmers Rebuild
    Reported by: Katie Shane

"I think most farmers are still in a state of shock," said Indiana Department of Agriculture Director Andy Miller.

Like many Valley residents, farmers are in the midst of rebuilding after flooding two weeks ago took out homes and businesses.

In the case of farmers the flooding many have destroyed both.

"This impacted a huge area of Indiana and once you get to individual farms it also impacted every aspect of the farms, Miller said. "Crops were lost, you have some cases where livestock were lost, machine lost and the guys are dealing with their homes that were damaged and then not to mention the fact that the land is in complete mess with sediment and debris and all kinds of things."

In an effort to reach out, while a number farms are still under water, The Indiana Department of Agriculture along with local agencies held an agriculture forum on Tuesday.

Farmers were educated on what federal resources and funding are available.

"At the state level we are trying to organize the relief efforts into one localized fashion and you know these folks are dealing with a lot issues and we are trying to give them one voice," Miller said.

That voice is coming from the Indiana Department of Agriculture.

Representatives say as rebuilding continues they are realizing it's not just crops that have been lost.

"They are getting out there and seeing that it's not just the crop but the top soil that has now been completely washed away," said Jane Hardisty of the Natural Resources Conservation Services. "Trying to rebuild the soil structure and get it back into some production which is going to be pretty tough."

But for Indiana farmers tough work is something they do rain or shine.

"We will weather this storm it's not going to be easy but farmers do this over and over and it's something they are very good at which is getting back in the saddle and getting things back in order," Miller said.
