Reported by: Sarah Fortune Wednesday, Jul 30, 2008 @09:35pm EDT Numerous consumers are buying into a new shopping trend. This trend has many shopping carts filled to the max. In this case, buying more could mean spending less.
The door to traditional shopping is closing and many consumers are opening up to the idea of buying in bulk. Marietta Hauk of Greencastle has a few tricks up her sleeve. “We’re hitting a bunch of stories today. We’ll load up the car then take everything home and put it in the freezer.” It cost nearly $800 a month to feed an average family of four. Marietta feeds a family of 14 on only $1,000 a month. “I save at least $500 a month by buying in bulk,” she said. That’s a $6,000 a year savings, enough to buy a used vehicle. “It’s cheaper to buy in bulk and you don’t have to worry about running out,” Marietta added. She also teaches her daughter, savvy shopping tips like using coupons and choosing generics. Marissa Haulk says, “We have a huge family so it’s really important to make a list and write down what we need.” Their list contains hundreds of items and it's usually about three pages long. “We usually end up with about five to six shopping carts,” added Marissa. Buying in bulk isn't just for those pinching pennies, it also saves time by cutting back on shopping trips. Groceries gobble up the largest part of the average family's budget. Each year, most families of four spend more than $9,000 on groceries. Currently, the food inflation rate is at the highest point in nearly 20 years. |
