Reported by: Elyse Evans Tuesday, Mar 3, 2009 @10:38pm EST The first neighborhood summit was held in Terre Haute.
It’s the mayor's way of hearing what's on the minds of city residents. Residents from the 'Avenues' neighborhood spoke to Mayor Duke Bennett and the Terre Haute Neighborhood Partnership. The mayor wants to share information about state issues and the loss of revenue facing the city's budget. Residents can voice their concerns so the city can work to make neighborhoods cleaner and safer. But the mayor also thinks there's another important reason to hold these summits. Mayor Duke Bennett says, "I think it's important for people to get to know their mayor. So instead of just calling in the office or something like that, I'm going to be out here in their neighborhood talking to them about their issues. And I just think that's really important, that people have access to their elected officials. So as we move all around town, it'll give people a chance for people to confront the mayor and ask him about whatever's on their mind.“ There will be ten to 12 more meetings scheduled around the city. WTWO will keep you updated on future meeting dates. |
