Reported by: Sarah Fortune Sunday, Oct 14, 2007 @10:14am EDT It is deer season and the leading cause of hunting accidents is something you probably wouldn’t expect.
When hunting even the simplest mistakes can be deadly. “We see broken necks, back, limbs,” said Max Winchell, an Indiana Conservation Officer. Especially when you are up to 25 feet in the air, one out of three hunters will be involved in a tree stand accident. One fall can change your life. “Make sure it is a good solid tree when you start out,” said Winchell. To make tree stand hunting safer always follow the instruction and manufacturer's recommendations on how to assemble the stand. “You never want to climb the tree with a fire arm strapped to you back,” said Winchell. Conservation officers do not recommend using homemade tree stands. Always tell a responsible person where you will be located when you are hunting. This way if you experience a problem you can be located before it is too late. Conservation officers warn hunters not to get in a hurry when using a tree stand, they can be extremely dangerous when misused. |
