  • Decker Pleads To Federal Drug Charge
    Reported by: Jon Swaner

    Wednesday, Apr 29, 2009 @10:48am EDT

Vigo County Commissioner David Decker has pleaded guilty to a federal drug charge.

In paperwork filed in U.S. District Court, Decker admits to distributing 3.25 grams of methamphetamine.

We now know what specific charges Decker faces, what's next for him, and what this means for his political career.

On Tuesday, David Decker signed a plea agreement with federal prosecutors, admitting that he was involved in a drug deal.

Decker is admitting to dealing about one-eighth of an ounce of methamphetemine.

Unlike state sentencing, federal sentencings follow strict guidelines.

That means his sentence can be no more than 16 months, and no less than 10.

The plea agreement calls for Decker to serve a 10-month prison term.

Federal prosecutors say Decker was a part of the large methamphetemine distribution ring that was busted back in December.

Federal wiretaps on robin Welker's phone led to eight indictments.

As investigators have talked to those arrested, some of them have cooperated by making statements.

Investigators then verified those statements with other information.

That led them to the conclusion Decker was involved in the meth trafficking ring.

The plea agreement also calls for Decker to resign as county commissioner immediately.

And after a hearing on Thursday, it's expected Decker will be placed on pre-trial release.

He won't be in custody, but he'll be expected to follow local, state and federal laws.

Decker could also be subjected to random searches and drug tests.

He'll also be prohibited from carrying firearms, and from having a passport.

This will lead to a plea hearing next month.

A federal judge will officially sentence Decker this summer.

As for Decker’s commissioner's seat, Democratic Party chairman Joe Etling must call for a caucus within 30 days of Decker’s resignation.

Anyone wanting to run in the caucus must file at least 72 hours before the caucus.
