  • Valley Family Relates To Missing ISU Student Case
    Reported by: Patrick Fazio

    Monday, May 4, 2009 @09:15pm EDT

An Indiana State University student is still missing nearly four full days after he was last seen. The search continued Monday for Gerald Smith, who's case is very similar to a previously missing ISU student.

ISU officers and students conducted another search for Gerald Smith. He was last seen walking away from 9th and Chestnut early Friday morning.

"His being missing is very uncharacteristic" says ISU College of Business Dean Dr. Nancy Merritt who also mentions that Gerald is a very good student and person, "The students are very concerned and the staff and faculty are too. Our hearts go out to his family."

The search has focused near the Wabash River. Gerald previously posted Facebook pictures of himself along the river.

Merv Javins says "I thought, 'Oh my gosh, what in the world is going on.'" The parents of Scott Javins are reliving when their son went missing seven years ago this month. His remains were found five years later in the Wabash River.

"It took me back to that night that Scott disappeared. I know what his mother is feeling. She needs support," Doreena Javins says, "You need to keep it in the news."

Scott was also an ISU student and his parents are struck by Gerald's similarities.

Merv says "Brown hair, brown eyes. Same major at ISU, in Safety Risk Management. Gosh, height and weight similar."

Just like Scott Javins, there seems to be no good reason Gerald Smith has gone missing. "Gerald has a very promising employment opportunity and had just received news of that progressing well," Dr. Merritt says.

Gerald is scheduled to graduate this Saturday with his classmates, who'll continue to search for him.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Gerald Smith is urged to call ISU Public Safety at 812-237-5555.

The Javins are part of the website http://mysite.verizon.net/res8pn1w/inhope2/ which is called In Hope Indiana Missing.
