  • Homeowners May Get Property Tax Break
    Reported by: Katie Shane

    Thursday, Jul 2, 2009 @05:23pm EDT

Joe and Janet Jones will celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary in October.

Joe is retired from Indiana State and Janet works for the Vigo County Sheriff's Department.

Like many families the couple is seeing the effects of a poor economy.

"I am the only one working and when he is a fixed income it's not going up but everything else keep rising," Janet said.

    Especially their property taxes.

The Jones say in the last year their home tax has risen.

"We pay our taxes every year," Janet said. "Year after year but we have gotten no relief from that."

But relief may be right around the corner.

During a visit to Terre Haute Indiana Senator Evan Bayh explained his property tax solution.

"Today is about making Washington work for us and not the other way around. And providing a property tax relief to middle class working men and women during these difficult times."

To do that Bayh is proposing making tax deductions permanent and open to all Hoosiers.

Before 2008 only taxpayers who itemized could claim a deduction.

The "Housing and Economic Recovery Act" made it possible for non-itemizers to claim up to $500.

Bayh says that's not good enough.

"Those who are not itemizing should have the ability to deduct their property tax," Bayh said. "So it's trying to elevate the burden through a tough economic time."

But as the nation faces tough economic times money might not be available to lift a tax cap.

Bayh says funding is the only roadblock in his plan.

"Some folks out there don't care to run up a trillion dollar deficit for all sorts of reasons but when it comes to helping with property tax relief for seniors and middle class people it's suddenly like oh I don't know if we can afford that," he said. "It's like I said, it's a question of priority."

A priority Joe and Janet Jones hope becomes a reality.

Bayh says he has the backing of senators from New York and Montana.

It is being reported that the chairman of the state Republican party is against the proposal.
