A bunch of government agencies have joined to create a consumer website. It's called food-safey-dot-gov . This is a resource we all need to check out.
For starters, it lists up-to-date food recalls from around the country. You'll be surprised how many recalls there are, and how often bad food gets in the supply chain. The site helps you understand food poisoning, it's causes, the treatments and how to prevent it. There's info, preparation and cooking instructions for meat, poultry and other food categories. Did you know hot dogs and luncheon meats can go bad in just a few days even if unopened. Even frozen, they shouldn't be kept more than a couple of months. Or how about this? "A food thermometer is the only way to be sure the food is at a safe temperature to kill any bacteria. Ground beef should be cooked to 160 degrees Fahrenheit, and chicken to 165." That's an excerpt from one of the free videos you can download from the site. And there's lots more on food-safety-dot-gov. (Join the WTWO Facebook page. Click on Community to start.
