Reported by: Patrick Fazio Wednesday, Oct 21, 2009 @10:22pm EDT Military health care could improve soon with the help of an Indiana politician. Senator Evan Bayh spoke on Capitol Hill Wednesday about chemical hazards.
Bayh introduced a bill to guarantee health coverage when soldiers are exposed. He says an Indiana Guardsman recently died from chemical exposure overseas and hundreds got sick. Bayh has bipartisan support to expand the Agent Orange law from the Vietnam War. Senator Evan Bayh says "Our bill switches the burden of proof from the soldier to the government, where in such cases it rightfully belongs. Soldiers exposed to toxic chemicals will receive care presumptively, unless the V.A. can show their illness is not related to their service. Exposure to toxic chemicals is a threat no service member should have to face." The Senate Veterans Affairs Committee will decide whether to recommend Bayh's bill to the full Senate. |
