Saturday, Oct 31, 2009 @08:51pm EDT Terre Haute is home to a cross country state champion. Terre Haute North's Tapring Goatee captured the cross country title Saturday in front of a home crowd on the LaVern Gibson course.
The North team took off on the sloppy course with high expectations coming off a semi-state win in similarly muddy conidtions Goatee is known to be tough in all terrain and she made a move to the front early, then surging away from the pack with about a thousand meters to go. She would build on that lead down the straight away, flashing a champion smile as she crossed the finish. Goatee, a freshman, captures the crown in her first state meet with a time of 19:07. The Terre Haute North girls would finish ninth in the team scoring, the highest ever finish for a girls cross country team in school history. The North boys were also looking to contend for a title. The Patriots hoping for some home course advantage as they aimed for a top five finish. North Central's Futsum Zeinasellassie would take control of the race early on, breaking away from the pack and winning in 15:51. Terre Haute North's John Mascari would earn All-State honors, capuring 20th place in the race with a time of 16:47. And Shakamak senior Drew Gambill finished 32nd in 17:02. The Patriot boys would capture tenth in the meet, concluding a successful season for the North cross country program. |
