  • Valley Town Comes Togeather To Help Family In Need
    Reported by: David Shepherd

    Sunday, Nov 1, 2009 @07:07pm EST

In the quiet town of Clinton, Indiana, compassion and love of neighbor seem to be values the people here embrace.

Mary Kennedy’s husband, Robbie, recently died unexpectedly, leaving behind his wife and kids.

Discovering Mary was facing eviction, Shaun Boylan said he wanted to help.

"We came together after Robbie pasted away and said, 'We're going to give them a house, not for her sake, well, for her sake and her kid's sakes," explained Boylan.

Mary suffers from a handicap and her young child Maddie has been at Riley Hospital for major surgery. Boylan said, "She goes in, just like last April, and had brain surgery to relieve pressure on her skull."

Now, thanks to Shaun and an outpouring of support from the community, the Kennedy family will get a fresh new start.

Boylan said, "Those children had no hope and we're going to give them that hope, at least try, all we can do is try."

"They're going to have a safe place to live and a nice place to live."

Boyland set up a fund at a local bank to help the family. That fund will give the family the ability to help themselves in the future.

"She'll pay us $300 a month for 5 years. That money will go into a fund,” explained Boylan. He continued, “At the end of the 5 years, we'll sign the deed over. It's hers free and clear."

But the help isn't going to stop there. Boyland contacted Ivy Tech to get Mary enrolled in school to give her the tools she'll need to provide for herself and her family.

"Ivy Tech's generously offered to help her go in, finish her degree and then they'll help her get enrolled in college with financial aide," says Boylan.

After Shaun sees the family is taken care of, he'll move on to the next family in need; generously giving of himself to brighten the lives of others. He said, "Whatever money is left over, we're going to buy another house and give it to another needy family. So, we're going to continue this process as long as we can do it."

Needing help is a feeling Boylan knows well. Now, he's giving back in honor of all those who've helped him in his times of need. He said, "I've been down and out and people have come to my rescue. Now, if I can turn it around and give it back, it's a good feeling."

Volunteers say they'll continue working until the project is complete. They hope to give the family the keys this week so they can begin the healing process and get back on their feet.

The family needs a lot more help. If you can donate supplies, bunk beds or your time, call Shaun Boylan at 812-251-5701.
