Reported by: Katie Shane Monday, Nov 2, 2009 @10:51pm EST Valley schools are preparing for flu viruses by stocking up on cleaning supplies.
It's an effort to beat the flu and keep students in the classroom. Just minutes after dismissing students for the day the staff at Central Elementary get to work. Armed with bleach and sanitizer crews clean everything from doorknobs to desks. Central Principal John Scioldo says it's all in an effort to beat the flu. "As the flu season has progressed we have upped the number of times that we have been washing all hard surfaces with any germ killing solution," Scioldo said. South Vermillion Schools aren't stopping the clean sweep at the classroom. Each afternoon the corporation's 32 buses get sprayed down and swept out. "We sanitize them everyday," said Transportation Director Paul Soyack. "We spray the seats and handrails and anything that may come in contact with the students." The same clean crusade is going on in Vigo County. Crews work around the clock to sanitize every inch. "We are constantly cleaning of course," said Vigo County Schools Risk Manager Mike Klippel. "Anything the children might come in contact with so they are being cleaned in the second and third shift but in the first shift even before the children come to school." The cleaning has helped, but Scioldo says despite their best efforts the flu is still hurting attendance at Central. "What the teachers are running into is a lot of kids at different levels." he said. "What we are trying to do is differentiate our instruction, make sure we are getting everyone what they need and catching them back up and trying to move forward but with as many absences that we have it becomes a struggle, it really does." Both South Vermillion and Vigo County schools have added sanitizer in classrooms for students to use. |
