  • Local Veterans Build Memorial For Fallen Soldier
    Reported by: Patrick Fazio

    Wednesday, Nov 4, 2009 @09:19pm EST

Veterans join forces to honor a Terre Haute soldier killed in Afghanistan. Flags are flying at half staff until Sergeant Dale Griffin is laid to rest. And work is underway to build a memorial in time for his burial on Veterans Day.

Adjutant Clifford Stephens said, "We was trying to figure out what we could do to inspire the family and the public and the veterans here got together and decided this would be a good idea."

Stephens and other veterans at Terre Haute's AMVETS Post are building a memorial for Sergeant Griffin.

Stephens said, "We was going to have a pavilion anyway, and we felt that this would be a good thing to dedicate it in his name."

Sergeant Griffin died in the war in Afghanistan last week, but his memory will live on at a pavilion being built at 24th and 5th Avenue.

Stephens said, "We have the family's permission to dedicate this in his name. They thought it was a wonderful idea... they are impressed with the fact that we stepped forward."

Volunteers are using materials donated from the community to build the pavilion.

Stephens said, "It gives us a place for fellowship to get together... and inspire new people to come into the post."

It will also remind the public of the sacrifices veterans have made for our country.

Stephens said, "All of us veterans paid the price to give us the freedom we have today to do what we're doing now. And some of us paid the ultimate price, and that's what Mr. Griffin did."

The AMVETS post also plans to name its patio for Terre Haute Sergeant Kyle Childress who died in Iraq in 2005.
