  • Valley Covered Bridge Vandalized
    Reported by: Katie Shane

    Wednesday, Nov 25, 2009 @06:12pm EST

Police are looking for clues to how an eight foot wreath was stolen from a Valley covered bridge.

Sometime Monday evening the bridge at Bridgeton was vandalized.

This is not what Mike Roe considers to be the holiday spirit.

"It's totally senseless to me," he said.

Just days before Thanksgiving and the Bridgeton Country Christmas roe arrived at work to discover the main attraction had been vandalized.

Christmas lights and an eight foot wreath had been torn from the Bridgeton Mill.

23:58:25 "it was kinda of a community effort and to have someone just come in and tear up the bridge to steal the wreath is just low."

And besides the Christmas lights and wreath that were stolen boards on the side of the bridge were knocked out.

Mike says luckily there's concrete here to stop the boards from falling in the water and maybe causing more damage.

Irene Gorham lives four miles from the mill.

She says the damage is heartbreaking.

"It just made me sick," she said. "Why when we have the Christmas thing coming up this weekend and next two weekends and they have destroyed the prettiest thing in town that people have worked so hard to get up."

Parke County Sheriff Mike Eslinger says without a clear picture of the wreath, finding it, and who stole it could be a challenge.

"I guess what I would maybe ask you folks is if any of your viewers that would watch this, that is the most photographed bridge in the county, we would like a picture of that wreath hanging on the bridge," he said. "That would help us a bunch."

And maybe help to restore some holiday spirit to Bridgeton.

Anyone with information about the damage or a photo of the wreath is encouraged to call the Parke County Sheriff.
