Reported by: Jon Swaner Wednesday, Nov 25, 2009 @05:59pm EST On Tuesday, Sheriff Jon Marvel proposed making pseodoephedrine a controlled substance in Vigo County.
That would mean you could only get certain cold medicines with a doctor's prescription. Pharmacist John Love says selling pseudoephedrine products has been very tricky lately. When meth labs began making a comeback in Vigo County a couple years back, he noticed a trend. "We had a problem where we would see them come in pairs, and we noticed they would park their car around back. One of them would come in and try and get their product. Maybe five or ten minutes later, the other one would come in," recalled Love. Love knows meth cookers must have pseudoephedrine in order to make meth. So the Terre Haute prescription shop made a tough decision. They chose to sell pseudoephedrine products only to known customers. Then six months ago, the shop chose to only sell them to folks who had a doctor's prescription. "That has been a big help. It's pretty much curtailed anyone coming in just searching for the product," said Love. Love says if the proposed ordinance passes, he sees only one issue. "We are limiting people from sometimes getting a product they really need," said Love. While the pseudoephedrine products are behind the counter, there are other cold medicines on store shelves. You'll find Sudafed or nasal decongestant "PE" on the box. The “PE” on this box does not stand for pseudoephedrine. It stands for phenyl ephrine. It is a nasal decongestant, however it is not quite as effective as pseudoephedrine products. You can find PE products on store shelves because they're useless to meth cookers. Love says marvel's proposal would limit pseudoephedrine sales for sure. But it will lead to more cases of prescription fraud. And some pharmacists will find themselves having to make tough Judgment calls on whether or not to fill prescriptions for pseudoephedrine. "It’s each pharmacist's right to refuse to fill a prescription for ethical reasons. We can deny to fill any prescriptions if we need to," said Love. Marvel hopes his proposal becomes law on January first. |
