Reported by: Elyse Evans Monday, Nov 10, 2008 @08:26pm EST You almost need a degree in chemistry to navigate the hair care aisle of any drug store. Many people are beginning to wonder if there are dangers lurking in those shampoos, colors and dyes.
"Read the ingredients. If it’s really hard to pronounce, you probably need to stay away from it because it probably is a chemical. The FDA doesn't really stop any companies from putting whatever ingredients they want in beauty care products,” Jeanette Yergerg says. Yergerg works at Sunshine Health Foods. Everything from shampoos to hair sprays and hair dyes to gels can contain unregulated chemicals. They’re chemicals that can end up in your body. "Your skin is your largest organ and it absorbs everything and anything," Yergerg adds. You might think something labeled natural is safe but be careful. “People are allowed to put natural on the label if it only contains 10 percent natural ingredients," she says. Your best bet is to read the label and see if you can recognize the ingredients. "If you can read what the ingredients are, see the botanical names, different flowers, herbs," she adds. High end day spas and salons are getting hip to the benefits of natural hair care. "You can use natural things to still create a beautiful hair care and hair color system," Aveda master stylist, David Isaiah Glasgow says. Aveda salons around the world sell products made from what they call "green ingredients". "The hair color smells good. It doesn't burn. It’s non-irritating," Glasgow adds. Aveda uses plant-based ingredients that don't contain petroleum minerals. So they don’t deplete the earth's fossil fuels or weigh down your hair. Those products are also unregulated. |
