The Winter Wake Up app is a must have for those living in cold climates.  It works for both Droid phones and iPhone and it's free.  It works like an alarm clock.  While you're sleeping it gathers weather information from your area.  It will wake you earlier than normal if there's been bad weather or snow overnight.  You decide when you want to be awakened.  That gives you time to clear your drive, defrost your car and still make it to work on time.  Set your alarm clock for a single day or on automatic repeat for the days you want.
From the North Dakota Extension Service - they know all about cold up there - comes the Winter Survival app.  It's free for the iPhone and Droids.  The app offers survival tips if you become stranded in your car.  The app determines your location and contacts emergency services.  The app's "gas calculator" helps you estimate how long you can run your engine on your remaining fuel.
