It's the latest buzz over bingo...several senior citizens in the Valley are chatting about a catering service that serves affordable meals just for them.
Local caterer Barb Troxel now uses her cooking talents to serve homecooked meals to senior citizens in Terre Haute.
"I've been cooking for 37 years and own a catering business; this is my way of giving back," said Barb Troxel.
She's a seasoned cook who knows that when you combine passion and patronage, you get the perfect recipe, and that's why her new services provide senior citizens both comfort... and courage.
"It gets us out, and gives us exercise. It also keeps our minds alert, and keeps us moving," said senior citizen Gloria Kolata.
Every day Troxel serves up her healthy and delicious meals at the Wabash Senior Citizen Center, where seniors say it's their social event of the day.
"If it wasn't for this I'd be at home sitting all day," said Kolata.
And for some seniors it's the only socialization they have.
"A lot of them don't have anyone. We're all busy, and sometimes families don't get the chance to do as much. This program allows them to have somewhere to go and something to do," said Troxel.
For many, it's not always easy to find the motivation to leave the house, that's why Troxel likes to provide a little extra incentive. She prices all meals at $4.50 for Senior Citizens Center members and $5.00 for non-members.
"If we keep the cost low, we know they're going to get at least one balanced nutritious meal a day. If we can do that then it's paving our way to heaven," said Troxel.
"When you're on Social Security, you have to live within your means, and they provide it right here," said Kolata.
Her method seems to be successful...
"They're excited to have a place to come. I've heard several times people say, wow it's cheaper than McDonalds, and the food is better. So, sorry McDonalds, but I'm glad that's the case," said Troxel.
Troxel says if we don't help out in our community, who will?
"These people have built this community, and they deserve our service," said Troxel.
Meals will be served at the Senior Citizen Center Monday through Friday at 11:30 a.m.
