Rose-Hulman Drops HCAC Baseball Tournament Opener

Manchester College hit back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning on their way to defeating Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology 8-1 in a first round matchup of the Heartland Collegiate Athetic Conference Baseball Tournament. 

Corey Marchant (top picture) hit a two-run home in the fourth inning to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead, scoring Brad Murphy who single to open the inning.  Jordan Nieman then followed with a solo shot over the left field fence to extend the Manchester lead.  Cody Schell then walked and advanced to third on a single by Trevor Kimm and a groundout to the shortstop by Ryne Lehrman.  He then scored off a wild pitch.   

Rose-Hulman answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth when Parker Fulkerson scored on a Derek Dauenbaugh single to center field. 

Manchester added four runs in the sixth inning, taking advantage of three errors by the Rose-Hulman defense to make the game 8-1.

Jordan Nieman, Kyle Norris and Kim each added two hits for the Spartans.  Marchant chipped in with three runs batted in while Schell scored two runs. 

Pitcher Justin Scott improved to 7-5 on the season, throwing six strikeouts in his seventh complete game of the year.

Derek Dauenbaugh led the offense for Rose-Hulman with three hits and one RBI.

Manchester is now 23-18 and will move on to face Franklin College at noon Friday in the winners bracket. Rose-Hulman fell to 27-13 and will take on Anderson University at 3:30 on the losers side.  The loser of Manchester/Franklin will then play the winner of Rose-Hulman and Anderson at 7 p.m. on Friday.
