And as the school year kicks off its first full week, the State's Superintendent visited the Valley.

Dr. Tony Bennett toured Clay County, ending the day as the guest speaker for the Clay County Republican Club.

He spoke to members about some goals for the upcoming school year, including 90 percent of students passing assessment tests and 25 percent of high schoolers taking an advanced placement course.

Dr. Bennett says that all academic indicators in Indiana are up, and that's a trend he wants to continue.

"In Indiana, education reform is meeting education results for children and to really talk to this club about the need for continued education in our state," he said. "We're seeing the results we want to see. We believe this is an opportunity to say you know, we need to keep on this path because Indiana is a model for the rest of the United States."

Dr. Bennett also says he's putting a strong emphasis on elementary level literacy.
