A local college is creating a new addition that aims to benefit the students and community.
St. Mary of the Woods College is embarking on an $11 million campaign to build a sports and rec ceter.
So far, the college has raised $6.5 million of the goal needed to build the facility.
The 36,000 sq. ft. facility will accomodate student athletes, who account for 30 % of the student body.
But non-athletes, and the surrounding community will also benefit.
"This project has a lot of potential to energize the Wabash Valley, and help submit St. Mary of the Woods College's role in the Valley, and help us reach out. We're just excited all around," said St. Mary of the Woods College President Dottie King.
"It's positive thing for our grad students and Woods online students that occassionaly come back to campus. This is a venue that's going to allow us to increase capacity for major college events, like commencement," said Vicki Kosowsky with student life at St. Mary of the Woods College.
The timeline for construction of the building depends on how long it will take to raise all of money.
Tonight, the college will host a gala fundraiser to kick off the campaign.
