Here's a way to get  healthy while helping the community at the same time.

It's a new program from the Vigo County YMCA called Lose a Ton, Give a Ton.

For every pound you lose, you donate one pound of food.

It'll all be given to the Vigo County School Corporation's Backpack Program.

The Y is teaming up with United Way and ISU Nonprofit Leadership Alliance to start this new tradition.

Organizers say they're excited to see what the community can do.

"It'll make it simple. We want to make it as simple as possible for everybody and enjoy it while you're doing it...and know that you're doing it for a good cause," said Eleanor Ramseier, executive director of the Vigo County YMCA.

Ryan Daffer, community wellness coordinator at the Y, adds: "And we just want to bring awareness. We want the community to know, hey, partner up with us, lets do this, lets make a difference so we can far exceed that 2,000 pounds because there is a need."

The Lose a Ton Challenge kicks off the week of Monday, January 21, at the Vigo County YMCA

You don't have to be a Y member to take part, and there's no cost to participate.

For more information, call the Vigo County YMCA at (812) 232-8446 or email Ryan at wellness@vigocountyymca.org
