UPDATE: Local Students Want Separate Prom That Bans Gays

A team of Valley high schoolers and parents rally for a separate prom that bans gays.

NBC 2's Paige Preusse reports how Sullivan High School says there's nothing legally they can do to allow it... several students and parents are taking matters into their own hands.

Several parents, students, and others who believe gays should be banned from the Sullivan High School prom met Sunday at the Sullivan First Christian Church.

"We don't agree with it and it's offensive to us," said Diana Medley.

Their idea is to create their own separate...traditional prom. Students say there are several others from their high school who agree, but are afraid to take a stand.

"If we can get a good prom then we can convince more people to come and follow what they believe," said student Kynon Johnson.

And now they want everyone to know where they stand.

"We want to make the public see that we love the homosexuals, but we don't think it's right nor should it be accepted," said a local student.

But not all in the community think what they're doing is right.

"We shouldn't be condemning people, and that's what judgement is. Christ came to save the people not to condemn them."

Local man Jim Davis says we've all sinned...so why should gays be treated with less respect?

"Love them as a person. You don't have to love what they do, because the gays may not love all the mistakes you make," said Davis.

Diana Medley is a special education teacher in town. She doesn't believe anyone is born gay.

"I believe that it was life circumstances and they chose to be that way; God created everyone equal," said Medley.

"Homosexual students come to me with their problems, and I don't agree with them, but I care about them. It's the same thing with my special needs kids, I think God puts everyone in our lives for a reason," said Madley.

"'So the same goes for gays? Do you think they have a purpose in life?' No I honestly don't. Sorry, but I don't. I don't understand it. A gay person isn't going to come up and make some change unless it's to realize that it was a choice and they're choosing God," said Medley.

Several local pastors support the separate prom movement.

"Christians have always been prepared for a fight. Jesus gave us armor for the front, not the back; we're not running anymore," said Bill Phegley with Carlisle Church.

Others, on the other hand, think they're casting stones... instead of spreading love.

"The feeling of being loved and belonging is universal," said Davis.

God hates [censored]. What the hell is wrong with goofy christians. By participating in a prom where sodomites will be flaunting their sin you are condoning their BEHAVIOR,

Capo T. February 28, 2013 at 3:42 am

A choice? This is a choice? Wow...if only that were true. But heaven forbid that anyone in the bible belt admit that God could have made a mistake. I am transgender. I have known since I was 4 years old. At that age did I make a choice? Did I even know what transgenderism was? If I truly had a choice, I would choose to be a normal person, but I'm not and I can't make that choice. It is who I am. I find these parents, church leaders and students to be offensive an intolerant! Oh, and BTW...I am a conservative...

Stephanie K. February 26, 2013 at 7:02 pm

By the way, jen, that does happen, especially in the bible belt. It's not overly publicized.

ian m. February 18, 2013 at 4:09 pm

Honestly, I would give a lot more respect and credit to arguments like Medley's if I didn't think that they are just cherry picking. Put it like this: the chapter of Leviticus was mentioned earlier in this thread. By all means, it's a good thing to live by your code, be it religious, civil, or what-have you. But if you're going to be citing that code as an excuse for intolerance, you'd better be living the whole [censored] code. Leviticus does have a line about homosexuality, but it also has paragraphs upon paragraphs on the kosher lifestyle, which I can safely assume is not observed very closely in Indiana. If Medley were also to burn the firstlings in the tabernacle fire, then I could say that she was committed and thorough in addition to being venomous, hypocritical and ignorant. Completely leaving aside the issue of homosexuality, it's not cool to quote scripture out of context in an effort to serve your own ends and grudges. Come back when you are without sin and you've followed every single one of the anachronistic teachings in that book alone. Then we can talk about throwing stones.

ian m. February 18, 2013 at 4:05 pm

Let me straight, a bunch of bigots hate gay people so they want to have a separate prom? So what would happen if they're racists too? Do we have race exclusive proms for them as well?

Jennifer D. February 17, 2013 at 7:36 am

How horrible that these high school kids were taught such hatred by their families and community. They weren't born that way (unlike [censored] orientation - don't be ignorant and ignore the science) - they had to be taught to hate and judge others. God didn't teach any such thing and we all know that. My family - Robbins, Cardwells, Brooks, Vaugh and other names settled in Carlise, Freelandville, Pleasantville etc., long long ago. I have fond memories of love and community as a child in Carlisle area. Beautiful place and loving easy going welcoming people quick to share kindnesses so matter of factly. I guess that time is gone and the area I recall so fondly is encouraging and growng hatred and exclusion of kids who deserve and probably need love and kindness so much from their community (and probably lack from their family and church). The values I learned from my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbors, clergy, and strangers there in Carlisle and Sullivan and Pleasantville made me into the person I am today and I was proud of that gift. Yes, I happen to be a gay man, happy and successful, grounded in my Southern Indiana roots but now ashamed to call the area home.

Medley is an embarrassment to the teaching profession. If she believes her gawd created everyone equally, why can't she treat everyone equally? Does she have higher standards than her lord and saviour?

If you "love the homosexuals" then you would not be doing this, this separate prom thing. You would be embracing all people, together. It is clear that you do not understand what Jesus taught about loving the marginalized of society. Read the story of the Good Samaritan again, really read it. Then tell me why you think this is OK.

Kathleen I. February 12, 2013 at 9:53 pm

I see a lot of black white issues here, about interracial marriages. What's that got to do with anything now we have interracial gay and lesbian marriages, so what are you saying Ms. Or Mr."The Loving Story" what was your point? What's really sad is that we all have a purpose in life. To openly force people to except things that are not normal and then get mad I mean come on. Who wants to see some hot gay teenagers at prom kissing and fingering one another, its a time and place for everything. Sorry but I'm tired of the whole gay/lesbian issue just go on and live your lives without trying to change the world with. It's a [censored] preference not a religion.

Spectrum B. February 12, 2013 at 6:04 pm

Just watched the Documentary The Loving Story...About interracial marriage in the United States....The same "Christians" were saying the same things about Blacks as these today say about gays...

Mark D. February 12, 2013 at 2:24 pm

Well, thank heavens that Ms. Medley and her compatriots have opened my eyes! Now I realize that Socrates, Pyotr Tchaikowsky, Walt Whitman, Barney Frank, Lily Tomlin, and Martina Natrilova -- among others, of course -- have had no purpose in life.

John B. February 12, 2013 at 2:22 pm

I always find it interesting that bigots make comments like the one above "We want to make the public see that we love the homosexuals, but we don't think it's right nor should it be accepted," . These people have a twisted idea of love, we will love you by excluding you, harassing you, making you a freak and refusing to share with you. That's not love, that's bigotry. They are not making anything better, they are simply serving their own agenda.

Mike M. February 12, 2013 at 11:20 am

Why Christianity produces so much haters? Isn't their god teaches love their neighbors as thyself?

Huy T. February 12, 2013 at 11:12 am

The comments of Ms. Diana Medley, a supposed special education teacher, are disgraceful and not becoming of an educator. As a Christian, I find her using her position as a public figure to spread hate appalling. Often, kids who would come to her with their problems have no one else to turn to, and yet she treats them with utter disrespect. As history has shown us, segregation of differences has perpetuated hatred and malice and fixed nothing. Her public position has essentially sealed the fate of many kids who will now face additional torment and abuse from other kids who -- thanks to Miss Medley -- think it's OK to accost, injure, and even kill others because of their differences. How un-Christian! I shed a tear for her.

I wrote to the Southwest School Board and this was their response. It would have been nice to know that the School system or the high school had nothing to do with this. "At Southwest School Corporation we value the importance of extra-curricular activities and encourage all students to get involved and actively participate in activities, dances, or school related events at all of our schools. Our Grand March, Junior-Senior Prom, and Post Prom is scheduled for April 27th, and we encourage all of our students to participate. I would also like to clearly state that the SWSC has never denied any student the right to attend any event, extra-curricular activity, dance, or prom based on their race, gender, [censored], or [censored] orientation. As superintendent it is my view that we treat each student with respect and dignity at all times. The only time we have denied a student from attending a school sponsored activity is because of disciplinary reasons or if they were not one of our students and did not follow the procedures for being admitted as a guest. We do prohibit anyone who is the age of 21 or older from attending the prom or school dances. It is important to note that the Southwest School Corporation and Sullivan High School is not affiliated nor in anyway responsible for the Alternative Prom. Information reported by WTWO Channel 2 out of Terre Haute, IN concerning Diana Medley. They identified her as a special education teacher, it did not state where she was employed, I want to make it clear she is NOT EMPLOYED by the SOUTHWEST SCHOOL CORPORATION which was not included in the story. In no way does the Southwest School Corporation support her beliefs. Sincerely, Chris Stitzle Superintendent "

Yet indeed it is Christians that want to burn gay people or at least have them put to death. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/03/pastor-sean-harris-beat-gay-children-sermon_n_1474510.html http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/north-carolina-pastor-calls-death-gays-lesbians-trapping-electric-fence-article-1.1082160 http://www.kshb.com/dpp/news/state/kansas/kansas-pastor-says-government-should-kill-homosexuals http://www.koaa.com/news/local-pastor-equates-homosexuals-to-child-molesters-cannibals-rapists/ And not there is a lack of domestic hatred and violence being called for in the USA, the Christians as usual have taken it around the globe, same message, death to gay people. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uganda_Anti-Homosexuality_Bill 2 Chronicles 15 13 All people (young or old, male or female) who refused to dedicate their lives to the LORD God of Israel were to be killed. It always seeks to amaze me how ignorant people are concerning another person's lifestyle!! You say that Homosexuality is an abomination of God's Will and that Gay people need to be segregated.- Okay, so what's Your advice concerning dealing with Wife-Beaters, Rapists and Murderers??!!...Aren't they an abomination of God's Will as well??!! If You're going to punish someone for the "sin" of homosexual, Why Not punish EVERYONE who is guilty of "sinning" against god??!! Hey, what's good for the goose is good for the gander Do you think they have a purpose in life?' No I honestly don't. Sorry, but I don't. I don't understand it. A gay person isn't going to come up and make some change unless it's to realize that it was a choice and they're choosing God," said Medley.

For an educator to say that gays have no purpose makes me thing that she never read a history book!!! Lets see if we can come up with a few historical gays.... Ummm... Oh... For starters... Alexander The Great, considered one of the most powerful commanders ever. Lost his male lover when he fell overboard from the royal barge on the Nile River. It is noted that Alexander wept bitterly for three days as he mourned the loss of the love of his life. #2 Michelangelo, just a brilliant man. #3 Alan Turing, WWII computer scientist who broke the German Enigma code which led to victory for the allies. So, that would be most all of Europe and the rest of the English speaking world. I would say that Alan Turing had "Purpose." #4 Leonardo da Vinci, He is widely considered to be one of the greatest painters of all time and perhaps the most diversely talented person ever to have lived. And last on my list is a man who republicans just love but, most of them do not know that Abraham Lincoln was gay. Abraham Lincoln has been consistently ranked by scholars and the public as one of the three greatest U.S. presidents.

Seriously, someone from Sullivan needs to petition that Special Education Teacher Diana Medley, should be fired. This person should loose her teaching license! Special Education Teaches should be professionals that understand the stigmas and consequences that segregation of specific minorities of people occur. She should be protecting people that are or feel different & vulnerable in society, not alienate, any student, like she is doing, without any thought of her ignorant actions to simply take a side.

Andrew A. February 12, 2013 at 3:34 am

Seriously how man gay people go to Sullivan High School? 10 or 20? --- and you mean to tell me that, those small amount of people are going to completely ruin everyone else's time, for only attending the same thing? //// How do these teachers and parents, expect these kids to make it in the real world if they can't deal with people that are different than themselves at their future job, college or anywhere in society? GROW UP & if the minority is to much to handle, then stay home! Selfish [censored] people always attempt to ruin fun for everyone!

Andrew A. February 12, 2013 at 3:09 am

I'm so tired of when I don't want to live by your stupid traditions, that you tell me I'm unnatural! ... Maybe all of the religious people that want a separate prom shouldn't go to a public school and go to a private religious school?! Religious have a choice, but instead they attempt to make choices to limit everyone, for their own choice to go to a public (Government funded school). ...

Andrew A. February 12, 2013 at 2:43 am

I so tired when everytime a homosexual commit suicide they blame it on bullying. Maybe they commit suicide because being gay is so unnatural. Now they are trying to compare gay rights to civil rights. Blacks have been treated far worse in history they didn't go around committing suicide. Gays commit suicide because it goes completely against their creation role.

Steven C. February 11, 2013 at 11:44 pm

Someone should remind these teachers this isn't a parochial school and that this isn't A theocracy. This is institutionalized bigotry. There is no difference between this and the old days, where they also used the bible to segregate black people. Disgusting...this horrid teacher should be fired. I'm sick of this religious proselytizing in public schools, wanting to shove their beliefs down everyones throat and thinking everybody should act according to their religion. Hypocrites....why not say kids of divorced and remarried parents can't go, on account of adultery being just as abominable as homosexuality in the bible, or kids from a single parent home...or anybody who's ever sinned...They are just bigots looking to use the bible as a rationalization of their hatred...since they can't hate black people anymore like they used too, bigots found another target.

Alexandra C. February 11, 2013 at 11:32 pm

I see a lot of [censored] from people trying to defend the defenseless by citing their religious texts, a/k/a their Bible. I got news for you all: Your Bible is NOT an excuse for disgusting behavior such as this institutional bullying. Civility precludes such atrocious behavior. But then, considering what I think of the true character of your "god", you ARE representing him well with such disgraceful hubris and self-righteousness in your hearts. What your "god" says about gays - or what YOU CLAIM IT SAYS -- is irrelevant in matters of public accomodation. After all, the families with LGBT members pay THEIR taxes, also -- and your CHURCHES DON'T. youtube mp3

John D. February 11, 2013 at 11:24 pm

Are you freaking serious? This is beyond stupidity. EVERYONE SHOULD BE TREATED WITH RESPECT. It does not matter who you are, what you look like or your sexuality. Everyone should be treated with respect, BUT IT IRRITATES THE [censored] OUT OF ME AND PISSES ME OFF WHEN THESE SO CALLED "CHRISTIANS" BRAINWASH THEIR CHILDREN INTO THINKING ITS WRONG TO BE A LESBIAN. OR ITS WRONG TO LIKE THE SAME [censored]. Get the hell over it people. ITS THAT POPULATION THAT DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE HERE LET ALONE ATTEND PROM. How would you like it if OUR LGBT COMMUNITY BANNED ALL STRAIGHT STUDENTS FROM ATTENDING PROM? You wouldnt be happy now would you? Think about how you treat people because i can tell you this. IT WILL COME BACK TENFOLD TO BITE YOU IN THE [censored]. Remember what its going to do to young adults in the near future. STOP THINKING ABOUT YOURSELF AND BRAINWASHING YOUR [censored] KIDS!!!!

Hope R. February 11, 2013 at 11:24 pm

"We don't agree with it and it's offensive to us," said Diana Medley. Well I guess it's a good thing it's not her prom then. What the hell? THIS is a teacher? No wonder our education system is 34th.

It gives me hope to see that the kids at this school have chosen to fight back against the oppression of their classmates, and against a regime of ignorance pushed forward by those people trust to "school" their children. I am completely and utterly shockled that as parents you idiots would try to teach your kids to be as ignorant as you. When our grandparents used to think that black people were bad did they forc you to believe it when you got older??? I dont think so. The parents on here are some of the most ignorant people i have ever heard of. you should all be ashamed of yourselves. Save America some time and effort and go join the CULT down in Kansas because you are leading your kids into a life of ignorance and stupidity just like they are!!

Andrew A, its way more than that. This should not ever have occurred in our day and age, little lone in a small town school in Indiana. This woman evidently don't teach science, or she would see that people are what they are because of their gene makeup. X's Y's etc. Excluding someone that is gay, is like telling a child with down's sydrome to snap out of it. Kids grow up to be who they are, whether a teacher a parent, or anyone says that is how they should be. I can't see anyone treating any kids like this by (excluding) them for any reason.

As a 32 year old American Gay Man, that also grew up on a large family owned farm, I am so over hearing some religious people make an argument of what THEY THINK is "traditional", because it's completely ignorant! Is it a law that people must recognize Christmas traditions like put up a living Xmas tree over a fake one? Is it a law that people have to go to church on Christmas Eve, just because traditionally the majority of Christians do? NO, it's not! So why should I and others in my community (GLBT) be denied my freedom to create my traditions?! This is why people want all of religion completely out of Government, because these "religious" people never got the memo, Thomas Jefferson and our founders specifically mandated in the Constitution that our Government cannot make public policy for or against any form of religion. Jefferson, wrote his own bible "for God sakes, that EXCLUDED, everything from the "traditional" bible, that science could not explain. Public Schools are the Government, they cannot make rules based on any religions "traditions" PERIOD! -AJMA

Seriously? How did this woman ever pass a test to get an Indiana State Teachers license to be a teacher in the public school system? It seems to me that the final test , I would think it would require a certain amount of human relations skills on it. What bothers me is that some kids do what they see in a teacher. They are a roll model. It appears this is just another thing that bullies will use for excuses to bully the Gay's. If a teacher does it, or says it openly, does it make it okay? Some kids may see that in all this and start bullying Gays and say if Mrs. Medley doesn't want them we don't either. Has any one though of that. Some will hopefully be wiser than that, but for the few that are not it is just a mess waiting to occur. Some believe that public teachers get used to everyone bowing to them, their school rules, and regulations, and eventually some, not all, take it to far just as this woman has. This is just a wrong display for a teacher. They just are supposed to follow the rules, not change them to suit them.

linda t. February 11, 2013 at 6:00 pm

Oh yes, and that woman is completely unprofessional. I feel deeply sorry for the young minds influenced by her. Sad to think that she is a teacher, you can get fired from McDonalds for talking religion.

Ummm this is a big deal if your a homosexual like myself, that pays taxes just like everyone else! I'm from the neighboring county of Knox County and yes it is a big deal to me, when people that are apart of my community are being discriminated against by religion in a Public School, that my Indiana State taxes support! What are we a Southern State in the 50's? What's next, us gays should have separate public bathrooms and water fountains? What the heck is a tradition, if we all have the freedom to make our own? -Andrew John Meyer Anson

by the way...i never once used the word 'HATE'....i simply stated what our Lord said....IT IS WRONG!!!! i have no hate in my heart for anyone, only pity for those of you who choose to read only the parts of the Bible that help you feel right and justify your wrongs. end of story. Good Luck Sullivan County

sounds like sullivan county has a gay problem...good thing we left years ago!!! can't handle the word of God, just the holy scripture of Ellen...bunch of sickos!!!! guess that scripture hit a sore spot aaron!!!!;)

MICHAEL D. February 11, 2013 at 5:22 pm

I assure you, I don't wish to be in the place you're headed for Michael.. I recommend you read the majority of the comments here, and let truth shine into your bigoted heart... when you reach those 'gates', holding up a Bible in an attempt to hide how you spent a life-time demonizing, dehumanizing, and attempting to both reject Jesus' message not to judge other human souls' sins, but instead trying to take God's place in doing that, will not save you... the gates you will find, will not be the ones you have pridefully told yourself you will be seeing... Hopefully someday you'll be able to cast out the demon of hatred that currently lives inside you..

Aaron L. February 11, 2013 at 5:19 pm

This issue is not as major as people are making it. The two sides that are speaking the loudest do not speak for the rest of us. The answer to this problem lies in the middle. I agree that the Bible talks about issues of homosexual activity and acceptance of fellow human beings. The truly loving and caring individuals will not turn anyone away and many in this community are loving, caring, and accepting. The angry, one sided rhetoric is not representative of all of us in this community. Each side needs to compromise and stop pushing one side or another. Now if I were in charge of the school and prom was turned into this debacle, I'd cancel the prom. It is a frivolous expense and many times it involves alcohol or drugs.

I am getting very tired of hearing about "free speech". When you sign a contract to work for an employer you agree to a code of conduct which specifically says what you can and cannot say and do at school or as a representative of the school. Basically, you do not have "free speech" with anything regarding work. The prom and going on the news identifying yourself as a school system employee and spouting these ridiculous thoughts goes against the code of conduct for employees at just about any school system in the U.S. If you want free speech, do it in your free time and not regarding anything that has to do with your place of employment.

Jon M. February 11, 2013 at 5:11 pm

To Michael D. : She can be like the racists of our recent past and 'believe' that gays are less human or less equal than her, but what she cannot do is to spread bigotry, intolerance, ignorance, and hatred towards youths in her school... especially using her twisted form of Christianity. You and people like her ignore Christ's teachings of love and acceptance, but instead focus on a very few passages in the Bible to validate your own inner fears, biases, and hatred towards gays, under the guise of being pious or 'godly'... you are being anything but. This is why thousands of congregations the world over realize that they have been wrong on both this subject, and in their behavior.. using the Bible to demonize and exclude gays from equality and joy in life, just as people used to use the Bible to do the same thing to Blacks in our recent past. Unless people who 'lie' or commit any other of the thousands of other 'sins' listed in the Bible are going to be excluded from the prom as well... you and people like her fool no one with protestations that you are only engaging in 'free speech' or acting in a 'Christian' manner... No.. you and she are acting like the Inquisitors of our past... and engaging in utter 'true' evil.. no matter how you try to fool yourselves..

Aaron L. February 11, 2013 at 5:10 pm

Diana Medley does NOT have a Teacher's Certificate Issued by the State of Indiana -- she is violating laws if she is teaching without a license

Adam W. February 11, 2013 at 5:04 pm

What happened to freedom of speech!?!?!? this teacher has the right to believe as she chooses, just like the gays!!! and, to all you scripture quoters...what about Lev 18:22???? my God says it is wrong...he made adam and eve, not adam and steve!!!! all you big bad 'christians' who 'support the gay community'...wait till your son brings home his first boyfriend!!!!! get a grip!!!! you are either a believer of the Bible or not...we pray these kids, standing up for Jesus, have someone out there hear this story and give them a 'traditional prom'...a Biblical prom...no one is casting stones, simply stating what the bible says...GOD did not make ellen gay...SHE did!!!!! and no, we would never watch her show!!!! and we don't shop at jcpenny's either....nor do we buy cover gay makeup, or oil of o'gay!!!!! how can this gay woman, who wishes she were a man, represent the female population??? she CAN'T!!!! she chose not to be a real woman!!! God will love us all, even if He likes not what we do...but if ways are not changed, ways that go against His word, He won't have to deal with you in the end anyway!!!

MICHAEL D. February 11, 2013 at 4:59 pm

Since Mrs. Medley freely admits that "I don't understand it," perhaps teaching is not the right profession for her, given this failure to comprehend such concepts. In light of this, as well, may I return her own quote (paraphrased) back to her: "We don't agree with (ignorance) and it's offensive to us." She and the quoted students and clergy are free to follow their religiously-motivated discriminatory thinking within their churches and their personal lives, but they are not free to seek its implementation in a public school setting or civil society. As a teacher in a public school system imposing her religious lifestyle choice in order to judge or denigrate or marginalize students over whom she may have "authority," Mrs. Medley has taken an unconscionable step way over the line. Her chosen beliefs have no place in defining programs or activities for the students in her school; and her uninformed assumptions about the choice of one's [censored] orientation call into question her ability to effectively teach actual academic ideas. Unless she's willing to share her scientific research into how one comes about their [censored] orientation...? Please do, Mrs. Medley.

Dennis D. February 11, 2013 at 4:56 pm

The fact that this woman holds these beliefs is her choice, however, as a fellow teacher from Florida I am taken back that she is stupid enough to go on TV saying these things while associating herself with your school district. Your personal beliefs stay home when you are a teacher and you treat every student equally. I can tell you without a doubt that my school district here as well as my previous one in Maryland would fire you the very next day after seeing you on the news and bringing this kind of publicity to the school district. This shows very badly on your local area and school system to the rest of the country.

Jon M. February 11, 2013 at 4:55 pm

The people that are rallying for this are just as wrong as the people that were rallying for people of different ethnic backgrounds to have their seperate everything. I think they're for holding a rally like this they are going to be looked down on just like the seperatists are looked down on today. Seperate but equal is never equal.

Max O. February 11, 2013 at 4:52 pm

What a Christ-like thing to do...Jesus would be so proud of just how hateful and ignorant these people are. Why is this hate ALWAYS disguised as piety? These people are NOT Christians; rather, they are bigoted, ignorant zealots who wish to inflict their radical version of Christianity upon all of us...they are no better than Al Qaeda.

Casey H. February 11, 2013 at 4:49 pm

There's a huge irony here in that Diana Medley feels that homosexuality is a "choice" but hating and excluding people isn't

Adam W. February 11, 2013 at 4:47 pm

Please explain why this obviously bigoted individual is employed by our public school system. If she is this unable to separate her religious beliefs from her position as an educator at a public school then she needs to be fired. I am disgusted that my tax dollars are used to employ a homophobic bigot.

Lori H. February 11, 2013 at 4:44 pm

Medley must not be a very good "Special Education" Teacher. She says: "I believe that it was life circumstances and they chose to be that way; God created everyone equal," said Medley. Therefore, Medley cannot help people born with any disability .... FIRE HER!

Adam W. February 11, 2013 at 4:39 pm

Medley thinks they have no purpose in LIFE? Are you joking? I would move the issue to BAN this teacher! What student of ANY sexuality, gender, race, mental capacity or ethnicity deserves to be taught by a woman with this kind of mentality? LGBTQ people, keep pushing forward. You should be allowed to enjoy your high school prom just like any other kid, without having to be discriminated against! "Do not judge, or you too will be judged.'' (Matthew 7:1). Medley, read Colossians 1:16 again, I wonder how you might feel if the tables were turned.... ps- isn't this a PUBLIC school? Why is the church getting involved?

Thomas G. February 11, 2013 at 4:33 pm

Ms. Medley might want to refer to this: The stupid [censored] might want to heed this law from her god: "Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it." 34:13-14

Mark K. February 11, 2013 at 4:04 pm

I would sincerely like to support Ms. Medley in her religious convictions but since she wants to start with excluding gays then I would also like to exclude everything mentioned in Leviticus such as people with tattoos, people who eat shellfish, people who wear clothing of blended threads, anyone who eats pork, women who are menstruating because no one can touch them, any young man who shaves or any of these young people who have ever talked back to their parents. In fact I think there are harsher punishments afforded these abominations than keeping them from attending the prom.

Mark K. February 11, 2013 at 3:57 pm

"Several parents, students, and others who believe gays should be banned from the Sullivan High School prom met Sunday at the Sullivan First Christian Church." (From story) Apparently all Public School "democratic rallies" start at CHURCH... Seriously how is this separation of Church & State? The headline says, "STAFF MEMBERS"; why are public school staff meeting at churches with students and parents as if they are a Government run School Bored to specifically single out other students that they believe go against their own RELIGIOUS freedoms???! Shot like this is exactly how bullying starts, because it starts with children witnessing ADULTS (including SCHOOL STAFF) blatant discrimination! Seriously how is this any different from how in the past non-whites were forced to have separate dances, water fountains, bathrooms, etc. People outta be ashamed of themselves! We live in America, for God sakes!

Andrew A. February 11, 2013 at 3:32 pm

okay these so called Christians need to get off their soap box ,and lit GOD do the Judging . last time I checked GOD was still on the thrown . love they neibor as yourself. not judge you neibor .

shonda s. February 11, 2013 at 3:26 pm

I feel so sorry for the special needs kids in that community. Sad that they have a teacher who is an intolerant [censored] in the classroom. Get a life lady and don't tell any student ever that you feel that because they are GLBT they "have no purpose in life." Awful hateful nasty Bible thumping fools should [censored]. Unimpressive, tragic group there Indiana. More education there please. Raise the future nutjob religious extremists at home or in private schools please. - From a Gay Christian. *Might want to proofread your article here - Medley? Madley? [censored]!?

christian p. February 11, 2013 at 3:26 pm

The fact that it is WRONG and UNEQUAL to ban "gays" to a so-called "traditional" high school prom is one thing. It's another when a special education teacher, one who teaches specific students who lack certain learning capiblities, states publicly that gays do not have a purpose in life. The question was, do you think that gays have a purpose in life? The SPECIAL EDUCATION teacher, Diana Medley, answers with, "No honestly I don't. Sorry, but I don't. A gay person isn't going to come up and make some change unless it's to realize it was a choice and they are chosing God." Are you kidding? I don't have a purpose in life? Like I say all the time, its one thing to believe God, its another to be downright hateful towards a certain group of people. This teacher should be fired.

Michael S. February 11, 2013 at 3:23 pm

If Diana really believes the bible is right about everything then she must quit her job: 1 Timothy 2:12 "I do not permit a woman to teach or hold authority over a man, she must remain silent"

Dave B. February 11, 2013 at 2:44 pm

*though. Not tough

Serenity D. February 11, 2013 at 2:43 pm

I am not for separating students this way. It is wrong. I would like to clarify tough, that they are not wanting to ban anyone from the school prom. They are however trying to host a private prom where only "traditional" couples may attend.

Serenity D. February 11, 2013 at 2:43 pm

I really savor the irony of a teacher who says she cares for LGBT students while going on record as saying their lives have no value. Just because Diana Medley doesn't believe that people are born gay, doesn't make her right. Her strong stance is one of arrogance, and something tells me that if she appeared in the parable of the Fallen Women, she would be one of the people that would have a hard time dropping their stone. Shame on you Ms. Medley.

This has to be the most abhorrent thing I've heard of since the Westboro Church picketing funerals of fallen military service members. Where does hate like this fit into Christianity? And as a special education teacher, I am embarrassed that this woman is allowed to teach children. With any luck, she keeps her hateful beliefs to herself and not the children that she has been given to teach. I truly hope that this represents a very small piece of the community. (and please, tell me the last time Christians had to run from anything.)

danika h. February 11, 2013 at 2:18 pm

" Do you think they have a purpose in life?' No I honestly don't. Sorry, but I don't. I don't understand it." So, this "teacher" believes that a subset of the human population has "no purpose in life." Does she believe they should be killed off as well since they have no purpose? This *woman* should NOT be allowed any whwere near a child, anothers or her own, because she is likely to tell that child they should (1) never have been born, (2) are worthless, or (3) should kill themselves. In other words, she is a BULLY

Elspeth D. February 11, 2013 at 2:05 pm

The teacher needs to stop claiming that she is doing this because she is "Christian". Many LGBT people are Christians, and many straight Christians support our LGBT brothers and sisters, sons and daughters. These include Lutheran, Episcopalian, UCC, Quaker, and Metropolitian Community Church to name a few denominations, all of whom recognize gay people are beloved children of God. Many of these churches not only welcome gay members, but celebrate their unions. So, Ms Medley and her followers cannot claim to do this because they are Christian. She is insulting many , many Christians, on top of her incredibly offensive words that LGBT people have no "purpose". She has more in common with the Taliban than with those who truly and humbly follow Christ.

Mary C. February 11, 2013 at 1:50 pm

Ok. Excuse me. Did you just equate being gay to being special needs? Where did you get your degree? Wal-Mart? Being gay is not a choice. Since she is from Indiana, I would urge her to read Brian Mustanski's thesis on genetics and homosexuality. He's a published Indiana University grad so getting any of his articles should be fairly easy. In short, we are all genetically different and therefore, structurally different, some of which are factors in homosexual tendencies and development in ALL humans. It is most certainly NOT a choice or a disability and she should be ashamed and jobless. It's hard enough being a teenager, the last thing they need is some backwards, christian socio-path giving you some backwards, passive-aggresive church sermon. Where do we draw line on this garbage? Straights Only Prom. Are we going to allow Straights Only water fountains too? Or Straights Only Schools? Or how about we make all the gay people sit at the back of the school bus too? Stop hiding behind this facade of christianity and educate yourself. She said it herself "I don't understand it". So go back to school! And when she said 'A gay person isn't going to come up and make some change unless it's to realize that it was a choice and they're choosing God". Really? OK. Be sure to tell that to Roberta Achtenberg - Commissioner on the United States Commission on Civil Right, Alexander the Great, Saladin, Oscar Wilde, Tennessee Williams, King James (He wrote that Bible you're thumping) or any of the people on this list that they'll never do anything purposeful. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_gay,_lesbian_or_bisexual_people)

Kevin W. February 11, 2013 at 1:46 pm

Can you teach your student body about apartheid? Their proposal for a "separate but equal" prom for gay students is abhorrent and reminiscent of apartheid. Have they not understood how hurtful this kind of action is? Have they not heard about the teen suicides of gay people who are made to feel second class? and finally, sod they - or the teacher who supports them - fall foul of your diversity rules? Your own Facebook page says you have a diverse student base. They ask for a traditional dance. Traditionally black people were enslaved or lynched. Traditionally, women were owned by their men. Traditionally, children were taught about the world around them!

Richard L. February 11, 2013 at 1:31 pm

My boys went to lots of Sullivan activities, I wasn't offened by all the pregnant girls or those taking part in the Ho'fest at every event...why should anybody be offened by gay and lesbian couples at a stupid dance, sorry but I really thought it was a bad thing to be so judgemental, I really thought Sullivan was joining the rest of us in the 21st century... God made those kids just like he made your sorry [censored] and we accept you for all that you are, maybe, sometimes anyway, definetly not this week though.

Don W. February 11, 2013 at 1:29 pm

"Jesus gave us armor for the front." NOT FOR THIS, HE DIDN'T! Since there are millions of Christians who accept AND affirm our LGBT brothers and sisters, this group CANNOT claim their discrimination is because they're "christians." They need to own their bigotry, and quit blaming Jesus! I'm sure if they tried to ban interracial couples, they'd never get away with it. Neither should they get away with this.

David F. February 11, 2013 at 1:25 pm

So Ms. Medley thinks it's offensive to treat those who are different from her in an equal manner. Where did she get the idea that she has the right to go through life unoffended? I would point out to Ms. Medley, that many of the same Biblical justifications were used to support racial segregation 50 years ago.

Mark M. February 11, 2013 at 12:52 pm

Dear Ms. Medley and all the other twisted haters, as a married mother of 5 and an in-home daycare provider, it is my sincere wish that you never relocate to Maryland. Keep your hate in Indiana and remember, "Karma's a [censored]".

Rebecca S. February 11, 2013 at 12:46 pm

"We love the 'homosexuals' but we don't condone what they do." Seriously? This young lady is wearing pants. According to the bible, wearing close of the opposite [censored] makes you an ABOMINATION in the eyes of god. Diana Medlely has no right being around children. She's had students come up to her and reveal that they're gay and she told them that she doesn't condone it? She believes people CHOOSE to be gay? People her choose to be bigoted christians. Gays choose to be honest an open about who they are. Imagine if one of those kids who'd confessed their secret to her had killed themselves. Medley has no right to be around children.

To say that gay people have no purpose in life?!?! Ttf?? She teaches in a public school right? wow I hope this gets addressed. Disgusting.

If the homophobes want to have a private party and not invite gays, that%u2019s certainly within their rights. But don%u2019t call it a prom and don%u2019t pretend it%u2019s anything but bigotry. You are only fooling yourself by saying you love the gays, but you just don%u2019t want to see them, hear from them or expect them to have the same rights as you. Not only do we see through those lies but your God does, too.

David G. February 11, 2013 at 12:04 pm

I hate to see anyone fired, but Medley belongs nowhere near students. She should certainly be "reassigned" to some place where she can do less harm.

Bill B. February 11, 2013 at 11:58 am

All of this saddens me to the very core. I understand that kids are being threatened now at the school, for their beliefs. To John C., not everyone in Indiana are this way. The majority of us are not. People hiding behind God to make their point have evidently not read the bible in it's entirety and using what little they know to spout their hatred of these young souls. Remember, these are kids. They are forming their opinions of what their lives will become. Also, for a teacher to say they don't have a purpose in life is going beyond my realm of thinking. Everyone has a purpose in life, I don't care what your color, religion, or [censored] orientation is. Everyone has a purpose or God wouldn't have put them here!

Nancy N. February 11, 2013 at 11:52 am

Also, that "traditional prom" sounds like it's going to be the lamest dance ever.

Daniel M. February 11, 2013 at 11:52 am

Please stop saying you "love" and "care for" gay people, you hate-filled ignorant fools.

Bob W. February 11, 2013 at 11:51 am

Are there actually any openly gay students intending to go to the prom with same [censored] dates? That wasn't covered. Is this just these people wanting to stand up and say "I'm intolerant for Jesus!" Also, Medley shouldn't be allowed to council students. I don't really believe that gay students would go to a special education teacher for advice anyway. I think she's making that up.

Daniel M. February 11, 2013 at 11:50 am

First of all I want to say that if the school corporation keeps Diana Medley beyond this year then the corporation needs to be fined by the federal government because even though she may have an opinion about things she is suppose to be neutral about anything and be fair. I am sure that if they wanted to seperate her special needs students from the normal prom she would be the first in line to say that it is not fair. Just because a student is CREATED GAY should they be treated like they are the devil himself, NO!!! I grew up around here, I am GAY and have been that way since as far back as I can remember. It has been proven to be in the genetic make up during pregnancy not a choice. Who is she and anyone to have the right to play God and judge anyone when that is Gods right. I am sure that if she had an affair she would never see that as being wrong. She needs to be terminated from her job and let her go to work in a christian school where I am sure she would be admired but in a public school system where even my tax money goes to pay her check then she has no business being a teacher.

Richard H. February 11, 2013 at 11:47 am

They're equal...but keep ém separate.....sounds oddly familiar......oh yeah! that's right...we've been here before when being black made you less of a person. Also.. "they chose to be that way; God created everyone equal" ....I'd like to know the date and time you woke up and "chose" to be straight..because I surely can't remember ever choosing. I'm straight...thats what I AM. Not what I choose to be.

JESSICA J. February 11, 2013 at 11:45 am

Let us first consult the Scriptures for "Traditional Proms"...

Kane V. February 11, 2013 at 11:43 am

So now we are on a mistake mission. God say love, but you say hate. Ur not my god nd have now reason to judge me, God will judge me. and this coming from people in Terre Haute just shows why your town is 60% poverty level. Take care of your own problems not mine. My problems and your problems are just the same.

Johnny P. February 11, 2013 at 11:34 am

Diana Medley needs to be fired immediately for violating the First Amendment in her position as a Government Employee. I also recommend that any gay students sue the school district for the same reasons. The time for this sort of bigotry is OVER.

Michael J. February 11, 2013 at 11:20 am

What's this? Hick town god botherers don't like gays shock! Well who would have thunk it?

Frank C. February 11, 2013 at 11:13 am

End the bigotry and sign the pledge to support gays with their quest for human rights. https://www.straightforequality.org/SignThePledge Show these people that they are in minority and they are not being Christian y by your willingness to support all people. Name calling and ugliness doesn't help. Thank you

This makes me sick that these people use the name of Christ to hide their own bigotry and intolerance of others under... are people who 'lie' or people who eat shrimp going to be excluded from proms because of 'their' sins?? Hiding their own hatred and bigotry under the banner of Christ no longer fools anyone with a true conscience.. hopefully they'll step out of the Middle Ages and into the 21st Century and abandon 'their' evil sometime soon!

Aaron L. February 11, 2013 at 10:38 am

I think that Ms Medley needs to GO BACK TO SCHOOL....or better yet, l;et her FIND A JOB at a Christian School......she's OBVIOUSLY Biased and NOT doing her job...she's Perpetuateing Divisiness....the total Opposite of her job.....no wonder Id never visit Indiana, spend my money there, I'll avoid it like the Plague of hate and Bigotry it is....

John C. February 11, 2013 at 10:28 am

Apparently this teacher forgets that as a school which receives federal funds it is illegal for them to discriminate against minorities including those with a different [censored] orientation. As a Special Ed. teacher she should know this law.

Rene T. February 11, 2013 at 9:59 am

Chris V. is exactly right, it's amazing that so many Christians want to use the "gay agenda" theory and that it's being forced on them and shoved in their faces, yet they don't mind using religion whenever they please and where it is not wanted. Separation of church and state, plain and simple.

Shan P. February 11, 2013 at 9:52 am

If this is a state run school then it is illegal for the school to allow this to happen. No decision concerning the education of our children can be based on religious beliefs. Thus the separation of church and state. I very strongly believe that people who spew this type of bulling/hatred, should be held responsible for all of the suicides in this country. Who are you to judge? And if your religious beliefs are so strong than you need to take your children out of this state run school and keep them away from the 'homosexual' that you love so much. Love to hate that is?!

Chris V. February 11, 2013 at 9:42 am

Saddened by the fact that a Church is supporting this openly vile act of discrimination. Yes Jesus gave us armor to fight, but we are to fight for everyone, not just our crowd. As an openly gay minister, I am saddened at the way they are using the church and the way the church is allowing it. Juses told us to LOVE EVERYBODY - not just the righteous. We are given two simple laws to live by (35Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, 36Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38This is the first and great commandment. 39And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. (Matthew 22:35-40). Sadly it seems that neither the student, parents, or even the church understand what these two laws mean. You don't have to act like them or even understand them, but you MUST LOVE them, We lead and teach by example, and my grandmother said it best before she died. "I don't think that you being gay is right, but that is between you and God, I will pray that you live a long and healthy life, and I will Love you no matter what. Be healthy, smart, and live what you feel is right for you. Hopefully I will see you in Heaven" She didn't agree with me, however she loved me just the same, and even after my father kicked me out of his house, she allowed me into hers, and had a talk with my father. We have since reconciled, and even though he doesn't agree with my lifestyle, he accepts me as his son and love me for who I am. Come on people I'm sure there are better causes to raise money for than trying to create a group of outcasts. Oh I am from Indiana, and I thought as a State we were bigger than all that. Might as well go back to a black and white drinking fountain and start re-building those separate restrooms as well.

Does this honestly suprise you people? It doesn't suprise me one bit. We had the same issues in high school. It's about stereotypes and social norms... then add on prejudice then you've hit the nail on the head... society has gotten to be a little more accepting towards the "homosexual" community but there are still a lot of them out there that are immature about it. It's not their life, it's not their way of living, it's not their love life so they need to stay the hell out of it..especially if they don't like it... They're trying to take away one of the biggest events in a student's high school career, that's low. Grow up. The sooner you realize that their choices don't affect you in anyway the sooner those people will have less to worry about and be a lot happier living THEIR lives.

Wow...what can I say? I am from Sullivan and I thought by now people would be a bit more open to the reality of the current day world. People choose to be gay? Really? The SPED Teacher that spoke needs to self reflect and think about what she said....she should be a role model to our younger generation...not a representation of what was believed many years ago. Does she believe gay students need to be placed in their own classrooms? Traditional classrooms and gay classrooms? Who would teach what? What about gym class? Are the supporters fearful that a gay student will be sneaking a peak at a "straight" student? Really? This is all crazy. Billy Sam Pheg. should think about all the events that happened many years ago in the church he attended with pastors having affairs....pastors taking money....etc. What about that? At any rate, I am not judging anyone...just desire for these people to think about what they are saying and the type of message they are sending out to children and everyone else that would come in contact with them. Simply sad.

I grew up almost my whole life in Sullivan County. I'm sorry, but I figured Sullivan County was more grown up about this. Segregating the proms and keeping those kids away from their friends on one of THEIR important times in THEIR lives is outrageous!!!! Great way to show our teenagers how we as a SOCIETY haven't grown up!!! Diana, for you to be working in a position that you do and to say what you did, goes against everything about being a teacher!!!! HOW DARE YOU!!!

A.J. G. February 11, 2013 at 2:44 am

I believe that the students and parents that want them banned shouldn't be allowed to attend, it is a act of hate and bullying. Also I believe they should be sued for harassment and humiliation of those students, Diana Medley should be fired and not allowed to teach ever again because all she is teaching is hatred and bullying.

Barbie B. February 11, 2013 at 2:21 am

Several parents, students, and others who believe BLACKS should be banned from the Sullivan High School prom met Sunday at the Sullivan First Christian Church. "We don't agree with it and it's offensive to us," said Diana Medley.

So Ms. Medley, I guess all special needs children are born "normal" and choose to become special needs students? Let's get real we know special needs students don't choose to be the way they are any more than these people just wake up one day and say hey i think i want to become a homosexual.

Rick D. February 11, 2013 at 1:27 am

It's too bad the article doesn't reference people in the community who don't agree and who support LGBT people. For all the bible verses these folks through around, how unfortunate they think they can pick and choose. The list of sins they would also need to be rallying against includes adultery, fornication (any premarital [censored]), gluttony (being fat), stealing... And I'm pretty sure most of these folks would be guilty of at least one. Clean up your own porch before worrying about someone else's.

Danielle H. February 11, 2013 at 1:00 am

When I saw this headline, I was praying it wouldn't be in Indiana. It's sad to see that people there are as ignorant and hypocritical as when I left (maybe moreso). I am straight, Christian, and from Indiana, but I seem to be the only rational person left that can claim that combination. The Westboro Baptist Church would even envy our ability to throw stones and judge others.

Michael B. February 11, 2013 at 12:52 am

We love homosexuals, but we want to show people that, you know, they're perverts, they cannot be supported, and we must distance ourselves from them completely until they come to their senses and stop being disgusting sinners. Horrendous, appalling human beings, through and through. Congrats on becoming a national laughingstock! And my blessings go to the non-hateful, non-bigoted members of the community who support ALL individuals and youth. What a horrible, horrible message to send the undoubtedly several LGBTQ teens in this community. It makes me emotional to think about knowing the suicide, drug abuse, depression rates already that are so high with LGBTQ teens due to fear, insecurity due to societally imposed self-hate, and lack of acceptance and hate from society. Why go out of your way to be divisive and petty? God ate at the dinner table with the thieves, swindlers and prostitutes. All people like this can seem to do is hate hate hate gay people and think they're noble.

How can someone like Ms. Medley be allowed around children. It's stupid, superstitious people like Medley who're driving our country further behind every other first world nation in terms of education. These dolts cherry pick bible verses and then interpret them to fit their needs. I guess Ms. Medley forgot about the biblical order for women to remain silent in church. I feel sorry for any child or other thinking person who has to live in a community where people like Ms. Medley have a voice in things.

This issue shows how ignorant and hateful some people are. From the minister who is ignoring Jesus' message of love to fellow man and a teacher who should not be allowed in a classroom as she is teaching hate and bigotry. Why are people so hateful to their fellow man.

Jenny M. February 10, 2013 at 11:26 pm

The school has no obligation to uphold any beliefs based on religion. I've been busy away from Southern Indiana for the last six plus years doing some other things but it never changes. I hope the students rise up to this and fight it. They should be proud of what they believe in, but that does not factor into a school corporation's dance and they shouldn't restrict gays from prom just because people "don't understand it" (Medley) Mr. Davis has it best with his expression of: "The feeling of being loved and belonging is universal," so why restrict the rights of gays based on your religious views? Are you also not going to allow athiest to attend because you want to "show the world you love them but you don't accept them for who they are." The teacher deserves to be relieved, if she has this feeling of uncertainty about something she clearly doesn't understand why can she be the same person who is taking care of special needs students. She literally claims that homosexuals serve no purpose in life... She must've missed the memo that they actually openly serve in your Armed Forces and have bled and died for your freedom for years upon years under the same flag you say you respect. Westboro Baptist Church is always looking for new recruits, maybe you can picket the next gay servicemember who dies since they clearly didn't service a purpose in life... People like you disgust me and will be the downfall of this great country we live in. Founded on equality and understanding, until you don't agree with how I believe... Arrogance breeds ignorance and this article lets it shine...

Diane Medley, ignorance and homophobia is a "choice" - your choice. [censored] orientation is not. The vast amount of scientific research shows it's genetic and epigenetic - educate yourself. http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2012/12/11/scientists-may-have-finally-unlocked-puzzle-of-why-people-are-gay How are these people like Diane Medley able to graduate from college with a teaching degree?! Liberty University? Scary!

What a bunch of rednecks! This is exactly why i left this area 38 years ago and moved to educated civilization in Bloomington, where diversity is celebrated and everyone has equal rights under the law. This is absolutely shameful. You can bet these same people would've been banning Black people or interracial couples back in the 50's and 60's even 70's "because it's in the Bible". Teaching hate and discrimination in the name of God is disgusting! This is the 21st century for eff's sake! Here's an idea...why don't they have their Segregated Prom at their local fundamentalist church where it belongs and let the LGBT students and their decent, fairminded, compassionate allies have their prom at the school!

Linda Z. February 10, 2013 at 10:42 pm

I logged in here expecting a fight. I'm so happy to see so many people speak out against what these homophobic bigots hope to accomplish...enforcing their personal religious beliefs on everyone else. When someone says "We love the (fill in the blank,) we just hate what they do, really means that they hate them. Period. If they don't want gay kids to go to the prom, perhaps the church should host their own prom for those with "like-minded" beliefs.

Dan B. February 10, 2013 at 10:02 pm

In my opinion... This is absolutely ridiculous. The bible ALSO says that you should not judge. By banning gays from an event that their school is hosting is judgement... and poor judgement, at that. This literally makes me sad... for every single person that has signed the petition. You don't have to agree with their choices or decisions... Maybe they don't even believe in God, so why should they be forced to live by his rules? I am 110% a believer in our Lord... just because someone else doesn't agree, or sins in a different way than I do, does not mean we should shun those who are different. Maybe everyone who has a problem with homosexuals should go to a private or religious school. Since when did the PUBLIC school system not allow people of the PUBLIC???

A *real* Traditional Prom would be one for White Folks only, like some schools still have in the South. I see the teachers are still teaching those good old-fashioned values.

Zoe B. February 10, 2013 at 9:48 pm

Is westboro in sullivan now?!

Jeremy G. February 10, 2013 at 9:23 pm

This is just not right, they all have to go to school together, so they should all be able to go to the prom together, every one schould get along, no matter what you R what has this country come to? some of the best people I no R gay, they never cause any trouble, good people, & the kids & parents that started this mess about the prom, shouldn't get to go to the prom & those parents need to back off, & if it can't be resolved then call the prom off, that's the only fair thing to do, if all can't go no one goes, I bet if it was like that they would all change there minds real quick.

I have a solution, why don't all the kids and their families that have a problem with gays and lesbians be the ones that go have their own prom else where and leave everyone else alone to enjoy their prom.

It is very disheartening to see members of a community rally for segregation and exclusion instead of inclusiveness and equality. Replace the word "Gay" or "Homosexual" with "Interracial Couple" and you'd get a press release straight out of the 1960s. What's even more depressing is that these people are hiding behind their Religious beliefs to justify their discrimination. This is truly a sickening story, and I certainly hope the public outcry against this petition will make these students and their parents reconsider their "Traditional" views.

Andrew A. February 10, 2013 at 8:46 pm

A "traditional" prom would be college age men courting high-school aged girls. What Medley and her bigot friends are talking about is an ignorant hoedown where "ain't no homos allowed." WTWO: why are you giving these clowns airtime?

Brian B. February 10, 2013 at 8:36 pm

I'm a columnist at a little publication in San Diego, CA. When I'm looking at the article I'm wondering where the voices are for those who support a diverse blog. Is there no one in town who wants LGBT people to attend the prom with the rest of the student body?

Autumn S. February 10, 2013 at 8:33 pm

I have a solution. Plan two proms: one for straights and one for gays. Then stand back and watch ALL of the kids (except for a very few) go to the gay prom. I guarantee it.

Dakota E. February 10, 2013 at 8:32 pm

I for one am Outraged that in this day in time that this is even a issue everyone has a right for 1 prom get over or stay ur [censored] at home ur loss

Tammi C. February 10, 2013 at 8:10 pm

Another way to look at it is like this.. By telling them that they are not welcomed is just the same as telling the black he can't drink from that fountain or shop in that store. I thought we were past all of this discrimination stuff..

Chris C. February 10, 2013 at 8:08 pm

Mathew 7:1 "Judge not that ye be not judged."

Chris C. February 10, 2013 at 8:02 pm

I cannot believe what I am reading. Here's a small thought to hold onto.. People are trying to find out why there are so many school shootings and young children committing suicide? This right here is a prime example of why kids fall into depression and find hate in their hearts and choose death over life. This is the year 2013. Things are ten times different then they were back in the 70's, 80's and 90's people. GET IT TOGETHER... Traditional? No. I don't believe that. This is a form of bullying.. and we have all seen the great lengths of what people do when they are bullied now haven't we? There are plenty of "traditional" people out there that love and support the Gay community. I know that people are entitled to their own opinions, but in a place where educators are supposed to be teach children to become young adults, the hatred and bigotry should be left behind. So whats next? A prom for blacks and then a prom for whites? How about the Jews and Muslims? Are these the thoughts that we want to put in the minds of %u201Cour future.%u201D High School is hard enough as it is.. going through so many changes and trying to find out your purpose in life. The fact that we even have educators backing this up is ridiculous and I personally think that they should be re evaluated as teachers if this is the case. Our world has turned into a very dark place and seeing this on the news makes me sad. It makes my heart hurt for all the kids out there that are trying to be who they are, and are shut down by selfish people like this.

Audrey A. February 10, 2013 at 8:02 pm

I wonder how many of the protesting students plan to sneak alcohol into the prom then have [censored] later. casting stones?

Craig K. February 10, 2013 at 8:01 pm

Wait, what? So... this news station reports -- as if it's just one more community issue -- the fact that students AND faculty are mobilizing to forbid students from attending a school-sanctioned event? Based upon who they are? Because, let's face it. No one is in your bedroom besides those you invite and those who accept... This is every kind of wrong and I will be spreading this news far and wide until the stone-slingers are shamed. Not cool.

Scot C. February 10, 2013 at 7:58 pm

I too am confused as to what it is they're actually trying to accomplish. Are they trying to force a public school to discriminated based on religious beliefs? Or are they advocating for a private event to do so? If it's the former, their school hasn't done a very good job of educating them about the difference between public and private. If it's the latter, I feel sorry for the children whose parents are raising them to become bigots. Fairly disgraceful all around, really.

Rochelle R. February 10, 2013 at 7:57 pm

"I believe that it was life circumstances and they chose to be that way; God created everyone equal," said Medley. Really? So by this premise people choose to have Downs Syndrome or Spina Bifida? Because God created those souls too. Ignorant AND a teacher, combo breaker.

Frankie H. February 10, 2013 at 7:33 pm

In the spirit of Jesus who told the crowd that the person without sin should cast the first stone, I think every parent and student backing this plan should first share with everyone what sins they have or are committing in their lives, particularly those of [censored] nature. I mean, after all, they shouldn't be "infecting" the other students with their sin. Premarital [censored]? You're out. Extramarital affair? You're out. Lusting after someone else? OUT.

Paul P. February 10, 2013 at 7:32 pm

Charlie J. February 10, 2013 at 6:26 pm

Wow. I think it is sad that people can't accept that others are "different" and don't fit the social norm. I believe that this teaches hate and says that it is NOT OK to be yourself for fear of offending someone who sees you as "one of them".

Chuck M. February 10, 2013 at 6:17 pm

Well then, perhaps they should have their "straight only" prom at the church. Wow, Medley is quite the self righteous Christian, isn't she? "Judge not, lest you be judged".
