A local couple shares their inspiring story about love...
 between their dogs that is...

NBC 2's Paige Preusse brings us a love story that proves animals are more like us than we might realize.

"They show utter devotion to each other like my wife and I do," said Jason Lawler.

Jason Lawler is talking about his rescue dogs..Ben and Jade...their love story began at the Terre Haute Humane Society, and evolved the same way it does for many of us. After months of bonding they had a family; a litter of puppies. But their love was put to the test when the Lawler's adopted Ben.

"We had him for about three weeks, and we thought he was OK, but he got lose on us," said Courtney Lawler.

The Lawlers say Ben trekked miles in the freezing cold for more than a day back to the Humane Society, for no other reason than Jade.

"He came out of nowhere and started licking her through the fence, like they were kissing," said Courtney Lawler.

That's when Courtney and Jason Lawler realized they couldn't adopt Ben without Jade.

"He'd keep getting lose if we took him and not her," said Courtney Lawler.

Now the canine couple is living out their fairytale ending in their new home with the Lawlers.

"They go on walks together, and stay together at all times," said Courtney Lawler.

Their humanlike love tale makes the Lawlers especially sad for the humans who neglected the two dogs before their rescue.

"If they can do that to an animal that can't defend itself, what are they going to do to a child who can't defend themselves," said Jason Lawler.

"They do have the humanlike qualities. They do have emotions," said Courtney Lawler.

They say we could stand to learn from them.

"No matter what they're loyal, and maybe humans could learn that from them. They also forgive and have limitless love," said Courtney Lawler.
