Vigo and Sullivan county officials have teamed up with the health department to investigate possible animal abuse.
Officials first served a search warrant for a home in Vigo County on West State Road 246 Tuesday evening. They say they found a large amount of birds pinned in cages--more than one in some of the cages. We're told officials found signs of deceased poultry. Officers believe there were more than 100 animals present.
"Mostly male poultry--roosters--we believe that they show signs that they have been prepared for fighting purposes," says Vigo County Chief Deputy Clark Cottom.
Authorities found probably cause at the Vigo County residence to search a Sullivan County residence. That's where Jeffrey McMahan was arrested.
He's facing a felony charge for possession of animals for fighting contests and a charge of felony possession of marijuana.
