Washington, Indiana, is closer to keeping raw sewage out of a city creek.

Like many cities, rain water run-off and raw sewage travel down the same pipes in Washington.

When it becomes to much for the system to handle, the excess sewage overflows into Hawkins Creek.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management says sewage overflow must stop.

The town will build a new sewage storage tank to handle excess sewer water, as well as, a finger system in a wetland area that will use the environment to help treat the sewage.

Washington has two years to complete the project.
