Spotlight on Crane - Installation Commander

By: Tom McClanahan
Updated: October 3, 2012
This Spotlight on Crane takes a little closer look at one person on the base that has a very important job.

He is Installation Commander James Michael Stewart. Stewart is kind of like the mayor of Crane or the landlord, if you will.

There are 13 major tenants at Crane. Stewart's many responsibilities include securing it's gates and fences and making sure the entire base runs smoothly.

Stewart's father and grandfathers were all in the Navy but served only four years each. He's made it a career, beginning as a pilot.

Stewart says, "I've flown about six different types of airplanes, primarily the P30 Ryan, uh, in my later stages of flying, I started getting into installation management. My previous job to this was as the base chief staff officer in Okinawa, Japan, and I enjoy running a base or being part of running a base."

Stewart is also a bit of a classic car buff recently buying a 1965 Buick Skylark Grand Sport in mint condition.

He's been here a year and says the success of Crane is based on everyone working together, a team approach to being successful for the War Fighter.

Steward continues, "It's a large base with a large population, lots of diverse backgrounds and everybody here just really bonds together to get the mission done, regardless of service, whether you're in the Army, Navy, whether your customer is down range or whether your customer is local, it's just a great place to work."

One of the activities Stewart is over is security. In the future you'll meet two members of the staff that are very special.
