A collaborative effort helps securely dispose sensitive documents.
Data Management Shredding teamed up with Union Hospital, and V.F.W, and First Financial Bank at the Meadows Banking Center in Terre Haute today.
Locals could dispose of old personal papers, receipts, tax papers, cancelled checks, and medications.
Organizers say such items can give away social security numbers, or other identifying numbers and information.
The free event aims to mitigate identity theft.
"Identity theft is pretty rampant right now. People are selling identities for about fifty dollars a pop on the internet right now so you do everything you can to get everything shredded, like your credit card, statements, checks. It's very important to protect yourself," said Andrew Southard with Data Management Shredding.
Come October, Data Management Shredding says they are doing a shred for the cure to raise money for the local chapter of Susan G. Comen.
