Spotlight on Crane - Part 2

By: Tom McClanahan
Updated: November 26, 2012
This Spotlight on Crane continues a look at the work being done on surveillance to protect War Fighters going on at the base.

Last week we showed you the capabilities and the structure being used right now in war zones to keep an eye on our troops and the enemy, just like they were keeping an eye on me when I shot this footage.

The work done here is in conjunction with contractors who work with Crane to accomplish that safety. It is so good some of the projects have resulted in patents.

Bob Payne says, "There are several different patents. I believe that the software that was developed here at Crane is patented and there's several other ones I'm not familiar with."

And there are improvements being done all the time. Obviously these towers that are used with the system are not always possible. The high tech effort continues.

Payne adds, "There is a what they call a manned portable system but the engineers here at Crane are also looking at technology to make it even smaller. Obviously some of the capabilities will not be as great because it won't be extended 80 feet in the air if it's being carried on a Marine's back, but, yes, there is a technology out there and they're looking at that now."

More proof that the safety and success is the top priority of the contractors and NSWC Crane.

Join us again next week for another Spotlight on Crane.
